Every platform has an origin story. Here's ours: why we built BentoTiles, what problems we set out to solve, and where we're going next.
The web gaming space has a problem. There are thousands of genuinely excellent HTML5 games scattered across the internet, but finding them is painful. Most game portals are cluttered with aggressive advertising, deceptive download buttons, and fake "play now" prompts that redirect you to app store pages. The legitimate games are buried under layers of dark patterns.
We built BentoTiles because we wanted something better.
We're gamers. We've been playing browser games since the Flash era - those gloriously chaotic days when Newgrounds and Miniclip were household names and you could lose entire afternoons to games that cost nothing and required nothing except a browser.
Flash died, but browser gaming didn't. HTML5 filled the gap, and in many ways it's technically superior - better performance, true mobile support, no plugin installation, open standards. But the discovery problem got worse, not better.
When we looked for good HTML5 games in 2024, we found:
We wanted a platform that respected both players and developers. A platform that was honest, fast, and genuinely useful.
The name BentoTiles comes from the Japanese bento box - that beautifully organized lunch container where each component has its own space, its own presentation, its own moment. Nothing is jumbled. Everything is curated.
We applied this philosophy to how we present games. Instead of an infinite scroll of thumbnails crammed into a grid, we use a mosaic bento layout where different games get different amounts of space based on their prominence and visual appeal. Each tile is a window into a game worth playing.
The "tiles" part of the name is about the interface - clean, clear, clickable tiles that tell you exactly what you're about to experience before you click.
Here's something we're proud of: every game on BentoTiles has been tested by a human being on our team before it went live. We don't accept automated submissions without review. We don't approve games we haven't played.
Our review checklist covers:
Games that don't pass are rejected with specific, actionable feedback so developers know what to fix. We've found this approach produces better games and a better library over time.
We're a small team with a big roadmap. Here's what's coming:
More games, faster. We're working on tools to streamline the review process so we can approve more games without compromising quality. As our library grows, discovery becomes even more important.
Revenue sharing for developers. We want developers to earn from their work. We're building an ad-revenue sharing model that will give game creators a meaningful cut of the advertising revenue their games generate.
Better analytics. Our developer dashboard currently shows play counts and session durations. We're adding retention metrics, player geography, device breakdowns, and A/B testing tools so developers can make data-driven decisions about their games.
Community features. Leaderboards, user-generated reviews, and game collections are all on our roadmap. We want BentoTiles to be a community, not just a portal.
SDK improvements. Our developer SDK currently handles basic lifecycle events. We're expanding it to support achievement systems, leaderboard APIs, and cross-platform save sync.
If you're a player: thank you for being here. Every click, every session, every game you share with a friend helps us grow the platform and attract more great games.
If you're a developer: we'd love to host your game. The submission process is free, the review is honest, and the distribution is global. Submit your game here.
If you have feedback - good or bad - about BentoTiles, we genuinely want to hear it. We're reachable at hello@bentotiles.com. We read everything.
Thanks for playing.
